Central plants are vital for maintaining a campus of buildings or manufacturing plants. Lowering operating cost and eliminating downtime are key elements to a successful system. DHE engineering has the expertise to simulate operating costs and produce highly effective and efficient central plants, whether it is chilled water, steam, hot water, or electric.

Highlighted Projects

Project: Chilled Water Plant
Owner: Bronson Healthcare Group
Description:
4,850 Ton (cooling load), $2.1 million chilled water plant. This plant supplies 1.3 million sq. ft. of buildings on 2 campuses. The plant has multiple variable speed water cooled centrifugal chillers with variable speed cooling towers. The plant is designed with a primary de-coupled production loop and variable speed distribution loop. The plant operates free coolers during ideal ambient conditions for lower operating costs. It includes 100% redundancy in the case of equipment failure. The plant was designed to be expandable and medium voltage gear was designed as part of the plant.


 

Project: Campus Electrical Power Distribution
Owner: Bronson Healthcare Group
Description:
700,000 sq. ft., of existing campus buildings on 6 “back-feed” medium voltage services where combined into one new service. Total project costs of $4.2 million. The new service provided redundancy through 2 power feeds, double-ended switching gear, automatic transfer switching, and fuel oil generator plant. The project included 3 main substations.


 

Project: Boiler and Heat Pump Plant
Owner: Eaton Corporation – Heavy Truck Components
Description:
7.5 million BTUH (heating load), $1 million boiler and heat pump plant replacing an existing boiler plant. This plant supplies 240,000 sq. ft. of diagnostic testing, research and development, and office space. The plant utilizes the heat rejected from the engine test dynamometers and extracts this heat via heat pump units for lower operating costs. The heat pumps are able to produce hot water 3 times as efficient at the high efficiency boilers. This new plant dropped NOx emissions from the plant by 91%.
